National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Releases New Drunk Driving Statistics

The most recent statistics on alcohol-related traffic fatalities have been compiled and released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the year 2005.  Here is a roundup of the statistics:

  • Alcohol-related fatalities refer to crashes that involved at least one driver, motorcycle operator, pedestrian, or bicyclist with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .01 or above. In all states, a BAC level of .08 makes it illegal to operate a car or motorcycle. At this level, all drivers show significant impairment in driving ability. Statistics are reported separately for this group, and are also included in all alcohol-related fatalities.
  • Looking at all states plus Puerco Rico, the rate of alcohol-related fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel (VMT) in 2005 decreased marginally from to 0.56 from 0.57 in 2004. This rate represents a decline in 25 states and Puerto Rico, and a flat rate or increase in 25 states and the District of Colombia. In actual numbers, the overall decrease in alcohol-related fatalities was 34, while the total number of alcohol-related traffic deaths in 2005 was nearly 16,900.
  • Fatal car crashes involving drivers or motorcycle operators with a BAC of .08 or above also declined slightly in 2005 to 0.43 from 0.44 in 2004 per 100 million VMT. 23 states and Puerto Rico showed a decline and 27 states and the District of Columbia remained flat or increased.
  • In absolute numbers, there were 154 fewer fatal crashes involving drivers or motorcycle operators with BAC of .08 in 2005 compared to 2004. The actual number of fatalities related to drunk driving declined by 154 in 2005.
  • Although there was a slight decline in 2005, traffic fatalities related to people driving under the influence remain one of the deadliness and preventable crimes.

If you or a loved one was injured in a drunk driving auto accident, you may be eligible for compensation. Contact an experienced car crash attorney for more information on your potential claim.
