Despite a recent surge in the number of motorcycles registered in the United States, motorcycles still have not overcome the visibility problems posed by their smaller size and relative rarity. It is tragically common for drivers involved in a crash with a motorcycle to say that they never saw the motorcycle. Sobering Motorcycle Crash StatisticsThis is reflected in statistics from the National Center for Statistics and Analysis on motorcycle and car crashes. In 2000, 35 percent of crashes that caused a fatality were caused by a driver’s left turn into a motorcyclist who was going straight or passing the car. In another 25 percent of such crashes, both vehicles were going straight. Only five percent of motorcycle fatalities involved rear-end impacts to the cycle. And when motorcycles are involved in accidents with cars, the motorcyclist is more likely to be killed or seriously injured. The same government report showed that motorcyclists were 18 times as likely as drivers to die in an accident in 1999. Occupants of passenger cars, by contrast, were three times as likely as motorcyclists to be injured in an accident. Defensive Driving Can Prevent Motorcycle WrecksMotorcyclists are strongly advised to help avoid crashes by riding defensively -- searching ahead for problems they can take action to avoid. This strategy, known as SEE for Search, Evaluate and Execute, is a part of the national Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s curriculum for new riders and often appears on states’ licensing tests as well. Other safety precautions motorcyclists can employ include wearing bright colors and reflective or shiny clothing; riding with the headlight on, even during the day; driving at a safe speed; and never, ever getting on the bike while intoxicated. Statistics show that the rate of motorcycle fatalities in 2000 involving excessive speed was twice the rate for passenger cars and light trucks. Alcohol was 50 percent more likely to be involved in a motorcycle fatality. If You're Involved in a Motorcycle/Car CrashBut accidents happen, and even the most responsible motorcyclist is still at risk for a collision with a car. In the event of a motorcycle-automobile crash, it is important not to say anything that could be interpreted as admitting that the accident was your fault -- no matter which vehicle you were using. Injuries and shock can impair your judgment at the scene, and admitting fault may make it difficult to recover compensation later, if you choose to pursue automobile accident litigation. Instead, you may wish to contact a personal injury attorney or a wrongful death lawyer to discuss whether you have an auto accident claim. An expert in motorcycle, car and truck crashes can help determine who is at fault for injuries, file a claim and pursue personal injury litigation, if necessary. |
